Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Entertainment to Distribute Upcoming Anime in India in Original Japanese with Local Language Dubbing

Anime Streaming giant Crunchyroll has acquired the worldwide distribution rights to the next film by renowned filmmaker Makoto Shinkai, excluding the rest of Asia but India. Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Entertainment will co-distribute the highly-anticipated film.
This upcoming film represents the newest project by Shinkai, one of the most successful and acclaimed animators alive. It will be distributed in India in the original Japanese language with regional-language dubbing.
Plot details, along with the title and release date , Dubbing ,are not being disclosed at this time.
Earlier, Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Entertainment had collaborated on the theatrical distribution worldwide of Shinkai’s Suzume, which became a huge commercial hit earning over $300 million across the globe, as well as receiving a lot of praise and even a Golden Globe nomination.
The premiere of Suzume took place in the Berlin International Film Festival competition section, thus becoming the first anime feature ever competing at the festival and confirming the status of Shinkai as a worldwide auteur filmmaker.
Previously, the other films of Shinkai like Your Name and Weathering With You have brought enormous commercial success and international acclaim to Shinkai and have changed the image of Japanese animation on the global market.
Your Name, which was released in 2016, became a world-wide hit and one of the biggest commercial successes in the history of anime movies. Weathering With You, released in 2019, was nominated for the Best International Feature Film Academy Award as the official submission of Japan to the Oscars.
Makoto Shinkai and his Filmography
Born in 1973 in Nagano Prefecture, Makoto Shinkai debuted in 2002 with the self-made short film Voices of a Distant Star. The film became highly acclaimed and received many awards including a prize at the Tokyo International Anime Fair.
In 2004, he made his first full-length feature film – The Place Promised in Our Early Days. This film gained much acclaim and won Best Animated Film at the 59th Mainichi Film Concours.
The next Shinkai’s film – 5 Centimeters Per Second, released in 2007, won Best Animated Feature Film at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards and the Lancia Platinum Grand Prize at Italy’s Future Film Festival.
In 2011, Shinkai made his Children Who Chase Lost Voices, which gained international acclaim and received the “Golden Monkey King” Award at the 8th China International Cartoon and Animation Festival. In 2012, he got a Letter of Appreciation from the Cabinet Secretariat’s National Policy Unit for being one of the “Global Messengers of Japan.”
In 2013, Shinkai produced his The Garden of Words, which won Best Anime Feature Film at Germany’s Stuttgart International Festival of Animated Film. Also in 2013, he got the Shinmai Select Prize.
Shinkai achieved a whole new level of international fame in 2016 with his movie Your Name. This film became the second-highest-grossing Japanese film and received Excellent Director of the Year and Screenplay of the Year at the 40th Japan Academy Film Prize, thus becoming the first animated film winning such awards. In addition, it received many international awards, including the Best Animated Feature Length Film at the 49th Sitges Film Festival and Best Animated Film at the 42nd Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards.
In 2019, the movie Weathering With You won Animation of the Year at the 43rd Japan Academy Film Prize and was nominated for Best International Feature Film at the 92nd Academy Awards.
The newest film by Shinkai – Suzume, released in 2022, became his third film in a row having surpassed 10 million domestic admissions. This film also gained major international acclaim, including the selection in competition at the 73rd Berlin International Film Festival and the nomination for Best Animated Feature Film at the 81st Golden Globe Awards.
