The beloved Japanese series is making a grand comeback with a brand-new series animated by Indian Animated Studio and co-produced by TV Asahi and Sony Pictures Networks India !

TV Asahi, in collaboration with Sony Pictures Networks India, is excited to announce the revival of the beloved Japanese anime series Obocchama-kun with a brand-new adaptation premiering on Sony YAY! from August 4, 2025, airing Monday to Friday at 3:00 PM IST.
The new series will consist of 26 episodes, each approximately 22 minutes long, and will be dubbed in five Indian regional languages—Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Bangla, and Kannada—making the show accessible to children across diverse regions of India.
Based on the original manga by Yoshinori Kobayashi, Obocchama-kun originally aired in Japan from 1989 to 1992 and became a cultural icon with its unique brand of humor and social satire. Responding to the character’s recent surge in popularity on Indian kids’ channels, the new production has been set in motion to bring fresh episodes to a new generation.
The series is being scripted by Shin-Ei Animation, the original creators of Obocchama-kun, with animation production handled by India’s Green Gold Animation, creators of the hugely successful Chhota Bheem franchise. This Indo-Japanese collaboration represents another major milestone in cross-border anime production.
This is not the first Indo-Japanese anime partnership. In 2012, TV Asahi’s Shin-Ei Animation partnered with Reliance MediaWorks for the Indian production of Ninja Hattori, another classic anime, reducing production costs significantly while maintaining high animation standards. In 2018, Shin-Ei and Green Gold Animation extended that collaboration with additional Ninja Hattori episodes specifically aimed at Indian viewers.
